Mirissa is one of my favorite places in Sri Lanka. It is certainly my favorite beach. Because it is a small cove, the water (during season) is several shades of crystal blue, the waves are calm, and the beach is quiet. I have been fortunate enough to live a 15 minute bus ride away, so I have spent many afternoons basking in the sun after a day of teaching. Besides it’s serene, paradise-esque beauty, Mirissa also has several beach restaurants that serve AMAZING seafood. Delicious prawns, fish, and crab that all qualify as the "catch of the day."
The seasons and tide have changed in Sri Lanka, making the beaches on the east coast beautiful and transforming Mirissa and other southwest beaches into mere shadows of their former selves. The waves are now rough and the tide is so high that the beach has nearly disappeared. However, I’m kind of happy that this happened. It’s kind of helped me ease out of Sri Lanka and prepare for going home. I’ve already had to say goodbye to my favorite beach. Soon I will be saying goodbye to it all. L
